Katie Heineman

Mt. Shasta - The Breast Cancer Fund - June 2014
About Me:

Hello Rise Above-Seven Summits supporters!

My name is Katie Heineman and I am honored to be one of this year’s recipients of the 2014 Rise Above Foundation Adventure Grant. This month I will be climbing Mt. Shasta, a 14,179-foot volcanic peak in Northern California with a team of women and men from across the country to help stop breast cancer before it starts. Since the first time I saw Shasta on a road trip, I knew I wanted to climb it. The opportunity to do Shasta and help support a cause I care about is incredible. Over the last 5 months I have organized a variety of fundraisers to raise money for The Breast Cancer Fund, a San Francisco-based non-profit that works to identify and eliminate the environmental causes of breast cancer. Training for the climb with breast-cancer survivors and family members of those who left us too soon as a result of this terrible disease, has been immensely inspiring. While climbing mountains is not a new activity for me, fundraising has been my own personal mountain climb and I am so grateful to Rise Above for the opportunity to help fund the Breast Cancer Fund’s groundbreaking work to prevent breast cancer by working to eliminate our exposure to toxic chemicals and radiation linked to the disease. I look forward to sharing pictures and stories of my climb and of the summit ceremony where we will fly prayer flags in honor and memory of survivors and of lost loved ones.

3-Day Susan G. Komen Breast  Cancer Walk for the Cure - November 2014
About Me:

Hello! My name is Ashley Studer and I am one of the lucky recipients of the 2014 Rise Above Adventure Grants! I will be flying to San Diego, California, to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure Breast Cancer Walk. Breast cancer is something of personal relevance to my family and I and I am doing this walk in memory and support of those who cannot participate physically. During the three days at the end of this coming November, I will be walking alongside survivors, supporters, crew members, volunteers, and fellow participants, being a part of something far bigger than myself. Each day we will walk about twenty miles that are sure to be filled with stories, smiles, and plenty of laughter! Before all of that however, each participant is responsible for raising a minimum of $2,300, which is where this adventure begins. For the next few months I will be working for the American Youth Foundation taking groups of high school youth on hiking, biking, and canoeing trips. I am so excited for this new adventure and challenge but will be getting my fundraising efforts underway very soon! I am so looking forward to this opportunity and stay tuned for pictures, stories and ways to contribute to this cause!
